Visit Venvi Art Gallery’s Online Viewing Room to enjoy and collect new artworks from artist Christina Klein’s show, “Domesticated”. The online viewing room opens on February 5, 2021.
Klein’s work showcases the themes of home, adornment, and textile landscapes. Klein’s acrylic paintings depict quilts morphing into landscapes and architectural forms. “Domesticated” incorporates elements from her previous series, influenced by visits to abandoned houses in the rural countryside, drawn in by the way they fall apart. “Domesticated” continues this narrative, focusing on the decorative interiors.
Reflecting on what makes a space feel like a home, Klein spends time sewing quilts using fabric collected from textiles and used furniture. These quilts become the basis for sculptures, mimicking collapsed architecture. The soft sculptures then take on a life of their own, serving as the brainstorming process for new paintings to begin. The quilts are collaged into different landscapes, with the textile patterns fading into the background and transforming into the
landscape itself. Canvases are sewn together, with seams and shadows that mirror the painted textures of the quilts.
Much of Klein’s work is sourced from recycled materials. Canvases are built using wood from an abandoned home, or pieces of discarded lumber from new construction. This juxtaposition of old and new builds the narrative of change that drives her work.
Klein currently resides in Oakland, California where she teaches drawing and painting at the University of California, Berkeley. She is a graduate of Kansas State University where she studied painting and sculpture. Christina Klein also received her MFA from Florida State University and is a recent recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship.
