Nancy Dillen | Memory Shapes
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Size: 30 x 66 inches
This art work has 3 pieces.
Scrabble words reveal clues to a puzzle in the middle panel. Words added were: draw, quiz, write, and xiphoid. The older woman in the left panel reminds me of my grandmother. She appears to be day dreaming as she washes dishes and gazes out her kitchen window.
Each panel is museum wrapped, painted black along the sides, and labeled on back with title, size, medium, and signature, and copyright symbol plus 1/3, 2/3, 3/3 to indicate the arrangement when hung.
In 2010, surrealist poet, Ruth Moon Kempher and I were asked to team up and create 2 new pieces for an exhibition at the Brevard Art Museum, Melbourne, FL called “The Transformations Project: a collaborative between 12 artists and 12 poets.” After much discussions about our backgrounds, I created some sketches that were based on my past memories. I shared them with Ruth; she shared some rough drafts for poems and words she wanted me to use once the decision was made to include a scrabble board in the composition. Eventually a completely new painting and poem were born.
