Sometimes I start with a question when I paint. This time I asked myself, “what happened to female genius during patriarchy?” In my mind, I also wanted to paint a woman screaming in response to Francis Bacon’s screaming pope, because what does that guy have to scream about? I never start from a drawing but this time, I had brown paper and charcoal so I could draw a woman screaming. I stood back and nodded. Yup, that looked terrible. Picking up a random book from a pile next to me, I turned it upside down and blindly ripped out the pages as fast as I could, and stuck it to the drawing. This inverted Madonna and child was placed over the woman’s face and it looked like a screaming face that was also vomiting. In her womb is an inverted St. George and the Dragon. I asked myself again what happened to female genius. I felt like the answer was: this myth must be vomited up. If you have a monotheistic religion who has no woman honored as a god and the only woman who is venerated is a virgin, it makes all other women whores.
