Press Release
The Surreal Imagining of Carrie Ann Baade showcases over 30 paintings and 15 collages spanning 20 years of artmaking. The haunting beauty of her oil paintings invokes the mythic past, with echoes of the self in layered narratives and fantastical parables. Baade unlocks stories from her subconscious mind, revealing psychological revelations in stimulating and provocative combinations.
This is the most extensive local exhibition of Baade’s work to date. Arriving in Tallahassee in 2007, Baade has painted here in north Florida and traveled her works to be exhibited nationally and internationally in over 25 solo exhibits and 200 group shows, including the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, Mesa Contemporary Museum of Art, the Delaware Contemporary, Billy Shire Fine Arts and La Luz de Jesus in Los Angeles, the Harwood Museum in Taos, the Warsaw Cultural Center, the Instituto de America de Santa Fe in Granada, Spain; and the Ningbo Art Museum in China.
On view at Tallahassee Community College October 19 – December 7, the opening is October 19th at 5 pm. Find us in the Fine and Performing Arts Center on the main campus.

"Carrie Ann Baade is a visionary artist. She is ferocious in her approach, not thinking about the casual observer but solely considering the resounding strength of the work before her. There is a visceral nature to her paintings and the emotions they provoke are strong and uncompromising. Yet, you are drawn to the beauty and elegance of the art, sometimes even wishing yourself into the painting, but then you stop yourself at just the right moment so that you can take a step back and admire the brilliance of Carrie Ann Baade." –
Ann VanderMeer, publisher, editor, and winner of the Hugo Award
"Baade's paintings open like portals, their dimensionality and intensity of color and figure pulling the reader into the canvas and across the timeless bridge of the psyche. Every gesture is sacred, every movement transcending the profane, as we confront through the intimacy of her work the ecstasy of the human condition entwined with the rush of the cosmos."
Professor Saba Syed Razvi, poet & scholar
“Baade mines imagery from the canon of art history to create collages that she painstakingly recreates using old master painting techniques. The process is a study of opposites, an act of creation through destruction. A mission to craft a feminist retelling of history by transfiguring images created by men hundreds of years ago…By drawing visual connections between the past and the present, her own experiences and the dichotomies of human existence, Baade presents a new visual language and proves anew the regenerative power of art.”
